Frederick Delius

Sonata No. 1 for violin and pianoforte

DCW 47
RT VIII/6
DCE 31b

Composer: Frederick Delius

Following a long hiatus, this sonata is the first of the chamber works of Delius's maturity. These, unlike his early efforts, were published in the composer's lifetime. The sources for the sonata are complex and somewhat dispersed, reflecting the many layers of editorial intervention in the work's history. According to Threlfall, Arthur Catterall (violin) and R.J. Forbes (piano), who gave the first performance of the work, subsequently made substantial editorial contributions, witnessed in the copies in the Royal Northern College of Music and BL MS Mus. 1745/1/34 (described under 'Sources'; see also Bibliography and RT.1986, 103). The succession of extant proof sheets suggest that editing went on after the creation of Heseltine's 1915 Stichvorlage, and at a later stage Beecham added a further layer of editing, which has been incorporated into the Collected Edition.

Composition: 1914.
