Composer: Frederick Delius
The symphonic poem Paa Vidderne shares its inspiration - Ibsen's 1859 poem - with his earlier melodrama of the same name, but other than a motif on the last page of score noted by Threlfall (RT, 131), which also appeared in Over the Hills and Far Away, there is no real musical relationship between the two works. Although the manuscript is dated 1892, the first performance was in 1891 and the work was mentioned in letters as early as 1890. It is possible that some sort of revision process preceded the final dating of the autograph score.
