A setting of J.P. Jacobsen, Digte, 'Irmelin Rose' (1869, ?1875). The date of composition of the original Danish setting for voice and piano is unknown, but likely to be in the mid-1890s. The orchestral version, like the others belonging to Seven Danish Songs, dates from 1897. The song accompaniment introduces a melody from the opera Irmelin (RT, 80).

The song was first published as part of the collection Fünf Lieder für eine Singstimme und Klavier (no. 5), with English words (translated from the Danish by Delius himself) and German text by Jelka Delius. This collection was reprinted by Universal-Edition, Vienna, in 1921 and by Boosey & Hawkes in 1949, and was included, with some corrections, in a collection of songs by Delius published by Boosey in 1977.
