Frederick Delius

Sonata No. 3 for violin and pianoforte

DCW 51
RT VIII/10
DCE 31b

Composer: Frederick Delius
Dedicatee: May Harrison

This late work was completed only with substantial help from Jelka and Eric Fenby. As in the case of the Second Violin Sonata, the dedicatee and editor, May Harrison, was a performer with a longstanding association with Delius: his Double Concerto was written for May and her cellist sister Beatrice. The sketches in 1745/2/5 are very complex, with material in various hands, but there is some evidence that the earliest sketches for the work were made in the 1920s, before the Second Violin Sonata was written (RT, 182).

Composition: 1930.

Instrumentation: vl., pf.
