Holger Drachmann's Danish poem Sakuntala (1876) was written after the poet saw a performance of Sakuntala and the Fatal Ring by the Sanskrit playwright Kalidasa. Delius set the German translation by Edmund Lobedanz in 1889, his first essay in the genre of orchestral song, and, like Paa Vidderne, testament to Delius's enthusiasm for Scandinavia in these years.
