North Country Sketches shares the large orchestras of its immediate predecessors among Delius's orchestral music (excepting the Two Pieces for Small Orchestra): Life's Dance, A Dance Rhapsody [no. 1], In a Summer Garden and Brigg Fair. Beecham associated it with In a Summer Garden as 'occasional sallies into what for want of a better word in aesthetic terminology is known as "Impressionism."' (TB, 132).
