Mitternachtslied Zarathustras

Composer: Frederick Delius
Author: Friedrich Nietzsche
Dedicatee: Arthur Krönig

Mitternachtslied Zarathustras was later incorporated, with some changes to the ending, into A Mass of Life as Part II/6 of that work, and ceased to exist independently at that point. Nevertheless, it was not only performed but thoroughly evaluated by friends of Delius in its original form, not least by Julius Buths, who in a 1901 letter praised the unity of mood but criticised the work ultimately as 'not a work of any maturity' (RL, 66-7).
