Composer: Frederick Delius
Scribe: Eric Fenby
Dedicatee: Eric Fenby

Fantastic Dance was completed with the assistance of Fenby. The whole-tone opening was derived from a brief sketch in a notebook containing material from c. 1920-4, while the middle section was developed from an earlier pencil draft by Delius. Threlfall has written of this section: 'No example of their joint work is more fascinating, nor more skilful, than the evolution of this typical 6/8 section from a 3/4-2/4 draft and its characteristic orchestration; nothing more appropriate than [Delius's] subsequent dedication of the finished work to his young collaborator' (RT.1986, 91).

Composition: 1931.

Instrumentation:
Orchestra : 2 fl., 2 ob., cor.ingl., 2 cl. in B flat, 2 fg., 4 cor. in F, 2 tr. in C, 3 trb., tb., timp., cym., glsp., arp., str.
