The concerto, dedicated to the first soloists, underwent considerable revision before reaching its final state. In particular, the earliest draft score and published version witness much development of the solo parts. Beatrice Harrison, the original cellist, later remarked that the work was initially 'written in unison' (RT.1986, 144).
