The action takes place in Seldwyla, Switzerland, in the middle of the nineteenth century. Both the writing of the libretto and the publication of the work were complex processes. According to Threlfall (who used Lionel Carley's research), C.F. Keary first drafted a libretto in 1897, but the unsatisfied Delius turned to Karl-August Gerhardi in 1898, who produced a German draft. Delius subsequently asked Keary again, before producing his own English libretto in 1899, although no librettist is specifically identified in any edition. Regarding publication, the work was initially privately published by Lévy-Lulx in lithograph form for the 1907 Berlin performance, before being issued by Verlag Harmonie in 1910. To Delius's chagrin, the vocal score version of this publication contained many mistakes, and material was delayed when the opera was being rehearsed by Sir Thomas Beecham for performances in London in 1910. Consequently, conductor and singers had to rely on the Paris edition with handwritten English translations added. The autograph score of the work, from which Harmonie Verlag prepared the 1910 published version, is lost. <lb/> <lb/>'The Walk to the Paradise Garden' that forms an entr'acte between Scenes 5 and 6 was originally a much shorter interlude. The new version, much-performed as a standalone work in various arrangements, was composed c. 1906, according to Jelka, and certainly before June 1907 (see RT.1986, 25; RL, 78).</p> </annot> Included with this item are (i) a title page and list of characters on smaller paper, with Lévy-Lulx's company stamp on the reverse of each and (ii) an English libretto in black and red ink, in Jelka's hand.

Schmitt's vocal score, entitled Le Jardin du Paradis, reflects the original demarcation of the opera into three Acts with a Prologue. In the absence of the autograph score, it is the earliest extant version of the work. This copy, marked 'Partie: der Schwarze Geiger' was that used by the performer of the Dark Fiddler's part in the Berlin 1907 production.

Delius Trust Accession 23

This item is a copy used by Ruth Vincent, who played the part of Vrenchen in the London performance of 1910. It contains her performing marks, and an English translation of her part in red ink, mostly in the hand of Thomas Beecham (see RT, 38). Inserted into the front of the score are i) a typescript of a 1948 talk by Norman Del Mar entitled 'A Village Romeo and Juliet. A Comparison between the two versions.' ii) the auction entry for this item, dated 9 April 1968 and iii) letters between Robert Threlfall and the Delius Trust.

This copy was sent to the Mondelli Theatre, Florence, with a covering letter from Delius dated 10 June 1907. As well as various cuts and additions, this copy has a MS insertion of the extended version of The Walk to the Paradise Garden (RL, 78; RT, 38; RT.1986, 25).

This vocal score is in both German and English. Threlfall identifies an earlier vocal score prepared by Lindemann and published by Harmonie alongside the 1910 full score. The piano part in this edition is the same as in the 1910 vocal score, but the English words are changed and stage directions added. This source was reprinted and reissued by Boosey & Hawkes in 1964 (RT, 39).
