The second of Delius's violin sonatas to be published in his lifetime was written as Delius's health started to deteriorate; consequently, while much of the work is extant in autograph, the final copy prepared for the publisher was completed by Jelka. The work was edited by Albert Sammons and Evlyn Howard-Jones. Sammons was the dedicatee of the Violin Concerto and lead violinist of the London String Quartet, who gave the first performance of the String Quartet, while Howard-Jones was the dedicatee of Delius's Five Piano Pieces, written around the same time as the present work.

This manuscript contains i) incomplete draft in ink in Delius's hand, broadly corresponding to bb. 1-140 of the published score, bearing pencil remarks by Jelka on p. 9: 'copy from here'; ii) a complete draft, begun by Delius in ink, continued on p. 5 by him in pencil (bb. 52-203, with bb. 175-203 apparently gone over in pencil by Jelka), and completed by Jelka in pencil (bb. 204-280); iii) bb. 61-183 of item ii) in Jelka's pencil fair copy, likely replacing Delius's pencil draft given the poor quality of his script at this point.
