This sonata, preceding the three numbered violin sonatas, was complimented by Grieg and privately performed in the rooms of Harold Bauer in Paris in 1893, but remained unpublished in the composer's lifetime (RT, 174).

This manuscript contains i) sketch material for the sonata, some apparently rejected ii) the violin part, headed 'Sonata in H dur' and iii) the autograph score, missing a title page. The violin part bears bowing and other editing in another hand, which Threlfall suggests is that of Serge Riverde, the violinist in the original performance (see his preface to the Collected Edition).

The first edition, published by Boosey & Hawkes in 1977, was reissued for the Collected Edition in 1986 with minor amendments.
