Setting of the first three quatrains of Emanuel Geibel, ‘Lieder als Intermezzo’, XXXVIII. Curiously, the song has no subsequent publication history after its first appearance in French translation in 1896 until inclusion in the Collected Edition (1987). Thomas Beecham suggested that the song had been performed in several countries, but was withdrawn from circulation by the composer for reasons unknown (see RL, 122).

This manuscript contains two relevant items: i) the autograph with German words, signed 'Fritz Delius' and dated '1888', with French translation interlined in red ink in another hand; ii) also autograph, a copy with French words and German words added, headed 'Plus vite, plus vite, mon cheval' and signed 'Fritz Delius'. This manuscript was the publisher's Stichvorlage.
