While some sources imply or state that the work was composed in 1892, the autograph score gives the date as 1895, leading Threlfall to speculate that it was originally composed in 1892, and rescored for orchestra at the later date (RT, 163).

This manuscript, in an unknown copyist's hand, is 'the first definitive version of the work in this form' (RT.1986, 163). Unlike the other sources, it bears a tempo direction: 'Ruhig und stimmungsvoll'.

Threlfall remarks that this score is identical with the RNCM manuscript, but with various retouchings, supporting his theory that the work was originally written for violin and piano and later orchestrated.
